244-1062. DENDY MARSHALL, C. F. A History of the Southern Railway, compiled from various sources. Waterloo Station, London: The Southern Railway Company. 1936. First Edition. 10.25" x 7.5", green cloth boards, gilt title on spine, company arms blind stamped on cover. 14 + 708 pages with many illustrations, including portraits, maps and company seals + 2 fold-out plan drawings + 4 colour plates: Together with 7 tables and a bibliography. As is known the work contains several errors and omissions that have been largely corrected in the second edition by R. W. Kidner; however that should not detract from this which is the official company history. this is a splendidly produced book, perhaps the most attractive ever published by a railway company in this country. Now getting hard to come by. Ottley 7320. Bumped on corners but otherwise fine condition.

The official Company Magazine, Edited by B. Webb. 9.75" x 7.25", illustrated paper covers, total of 130 pages with numerous photos in text + 84 pages, including covers with adverts, many of which are illustrated, Much of interest in these, including short bits on the new electric locomotive CC1 and the 0-6-0 Q1 Class steam locomotives. These war time issues are hard to come by. Showing age in places but complete and without tears.

A reprint of the fifth edition of 1896 by Crosby Lockwood and Son, London. 8.75" x 5.5", cloth boards in a frayed wrapper. Frontis plate + 12 pages with a photo + 252 pages + 7 plates, all with 121 photos, drawings & diagrams. A detailed and comprehensive account that charts the development of the nineteenth-century steam locomotive engine from Richard Trevithick's experiments in 1804 to the high-speed locomotives of the 1880s and 1890s. Excellent content, a standard work on the subject. Very fine condition.

Giving a descriptive history of railways, mainly American, with an emphasis given to the latest developments. The series was originally aimed at young people but most adults would not find a problem with the written style.
