Seen underway with a down local to Chatham. (I take this opportunity to mention the Crampton Tower Museum at Broadstairs which I have written about in a previous catalogue. The Crampton now has a large events hall for hire which will help raise the extra funds to pay its rent which has increased massively. It is important to preserve such historical collections and I hope if you are in the area you will visit this fine preserved tower. Mary). Very fine condition.

246-2295. STEPHENSON, John and Thomas. Contract for Construction of a Railway in North Western Spain, 1866. Being the original translated document by M de Barbachino of Santander, who acted as Broker and Interpreter of the contract from the English, written 23rd November 1866. For the English Engineers, John Stephenson and Thomas Stephenson to construct a railway in Galicia. 12.5" x 8.5", 11 pages manuscript in ink, stamped and impressed with official dated seal in three places. Signed, dated and rubber stamped by Barbachino. Spanish text. The contract includes details of payment to the Stephenson's and a very lengthy inventory of itemised costs for the work to be carried out. All monies remain in sterling. An important and unique piece of history. Obviously a once in a lifetime opportunity. All in fine condition.

Showing the interior of the loading facility with two Oweco filling lances, and the narrow gauge track between the standard line for the winch operated bogey mule which draws the tank wagons through for loading. Both lithographed by C. Fischach, Mammington. Wide margin, unopened pages for binding. German text. An important detailed report. Title page is a little grubby on the outside but all is without damage and in generally fine condition. Certainly you will like it.

Giving an account of the journey by train from Peshawar in Pakistan, across India to Calcutta, up to Darjeeling in Napal, and over to Dhaka and through to Chittagong in Bangladesh. Interesting pictures. Mary and I have travelled over much of this same route. Very fine condition.

An important early technical work. Very scarce. Ottley 293. Together with a separate copy, 8.5" x 5.5", 24 pages publishers catalogue on various branches of architecture, civil engineering, mechanics, etc. by John Weale, London. circa 1835. The book is in the original quite crude boards but has had the back-strip replaced in recent times with a makeshift repair, the inside cover is signed "Mansfield Grieve" in ink, many pages have age foxing.

An account of railways and traffic in the Nottingham area. Much information. As new condition.

246-2324. Wharfdale Railway Company. Report of the Directors, submitted to the half-yearly meeting to be held at Fleischmann's Scarborough Hotel, in Leeds, 21st August 1849. Wharfdale Railway Offices, Skipton. 21st July 1849. 10.5" x 8.5", 2 pages with a couple of amendments made to the text in ink, by the Company Secretary. + a further page with a statement of Receipts and Expenditure from the formation of the company, 20th June 1845. A most interesting early item, the Directors adhere to their previously expressed opinion as to the soundness of the Undertaking and set out how the railway will link with other railways and proposals.

(Le Caire, 1933). Bruxelles. 1932. Original Printing in a numbered edition of 2000 copies, printed on Excelsior Cartridge paper. This being copy No. 1176. 11" x 7.5", bound in the publishers printed heavy paper wrap. Frontis plate + 664 uncut and unopened pages, with 272 photos, some of which are photogravure and one in colour, also drawings and maps, two of these fold out + 1 page errata. French text. Giving a full history and detailed technical description of the railways of Egypt and the Sudan, their locomotives, rolling stock and equipment, etcetera. A most important work, the author being a Professor at the University of Brussels. Scarce, this copy has the added distinction of being an unused copy which is ready for binding in leather boards as befits an item of this quality. Slight age grubbiness on outer covers otherwise delightful in generally very fine condition.
